2800 East Lake: What’s next?

Posted

Redesign Inc. is asking the community to help answer that question through a series of interactive events this May. Residents, neighbors, and anyone with a stake in the future of the area are invited to participate in walking tours, focus groups, and design reviews that will shape the next chapter of this historic site.

The 2.4-acre property – once home to a large U.S. Bank branch – was donated to Redesign after it was heavily damaged during the civil unrest following the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police. Redesign, a nonprofit community development corporation that has been serving Greater Longfellow for decades, has been leading a multi-year effort to listen, learn, and envision what this corner could become.

Here’s how you can get involved in May:

Downtown Longfellow Walking Tour
Thursday, May 8 | 5:30–6:30 PM | Meet at 2800 E Lake Street
Join resident and community organizer Bobbie Erichsen for a guided tour exploring the stories and shifts that have defined Downtown Longfellow. Participants will also be invited to share their own memories and ideas for the area’s future.

Focus Group: 2800 East Lake Street Redevelopment Conversation
Monday, May 19 | 6–7:30 p.m. | East Lake Library
This conversation will dig into what the community has already shared and begin shaping those ideas into concepts. Attendees will help prioritize themes and features for the site.

Remember & Reimagine: Review and Comment on Redevelopment Ideas
Saturday, May 24 | 5–9 p.m. | 2800 East Lake Street
Come see preliminary design concepts based on earlier community input, and help shape the direction before plans are finalized. This drop-in event will also include rollerskating with free skate rentals, artmaking workshops, Art Cars, and a Drive-In / Bike-In in Shadow show!
